The blood of Jesus is not only precious for our redemption but also contains miraculous healing power. While many Christians readily accept forgiveness of sins through Christ's blood, we often struggle to embrace the healing that is also available through the same blood.
Is Healing Really in the Blood of Jesus?
When Jesus walked the earth, His pure blood brought immediate healing to those who were sick. Matthew 8:16-17 tells us: "When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 'He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.'"
Jesus bore our sicknesses just as He bore our sins. When did this happen? It was when He drank the cup in Gethsemane. That cup contained not only our sins but also our infirmities and sicknesses.
What Does the Bible Say About Healing Through Christ's Blood?
King David prophetically saw this healing power long before Christ came. In Psalm 103:2-3, he wrote: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases."
David looked ahead and saw what Jesus would accomplish, exercising faith in the finished work that was yet to come. We look back at the same finished work with the same faith.
First Peter 2:24 further confirms this truth: "Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed." Notice the past tense: "were healed." The healing happened when Jesus was scourged, His back opened like a plowed field, and His precious blood flowed from those wounds.
Why Don't All Christians Experience Healing?
If healing is in the blood of Jesus, why don't all Christians experience it? The answer is simple: it requires faith. Just as the blood of Jesus doesn't cleanse a sinner who doesn't believe, it also doesn't heal those who don't have faith in its healing power.
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Hebrews 11:6 states: "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."
Real Examples of Healing Through Faith
Consider the testimony of a man who contracted COVID-19. When a brother from the church prayed for him, he was miraculously healed on the spot. Not only was he healed, but he gained an enhanced sense of smell that allows him to discern harmful preservatives in food—a remarkable gift that came through his healing experience.
Another example is a woman who was desperately sick for months. After being anointed with oil and prayed for, she felt something cleansing moving down her spine, and she began to be restored to health.
How Should We Approach Healing Through Christ's Blood?
We should approach healing with the same confidence we have in forgiveness. However, we often struggle with healing because it requires visible evidence, whereas forgiveness is accepted by faith without visible proof.
Sometimes healing comes instantly, and other times it may take persistence in faith. Smith Wigglesworth, a renowned healing evangelist, observed that major diseases are often easier to heal than minor ones because life-threatening conditions drive us to deeper faith and desperation.
What If I'm Still Waiting for Healing?
If you're contending with an illness or condition and haven't yet experienced healing, don't condemn yourself for lack of faith. The carnal mind gets offended when someone questions their faith, but the spiritual mind goes to the cross. Instead of feeling condemned, simply ask God for more faith.
Remember that the timing of healing, like other aspects of God's promises, may not always align with our expectations. Faith is "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).
The Resurrection Power
Jesus went into the grave with the cup He drank—the cup containing our sins and sicknesses. But He didn't stay there! Through the resurrection, Jesus conquered death and sent the Holy Spirit to work in us.
Hebrews 13:20-21 beautifully expresses this: "Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen."
Life Application
This week, I challenge you to apply the blood of Jesus to any area of sickness or infirmity in your life. By faith, receive the power of Christ's blood over your body, soul, and spirit. Ask for His blood to make you whole.
Consider these questions:
• Am I approaching physical healing with the same faith I have for spiritual forgiveness?
• Where might I be limiting God's healing power in my life?
• How can I exercise greater faith in the complete work of Christ—both for forgiveness and healing?
• Am I willing to persist in faith even when healing isn't immediately visible?
Remember, the same blood that cleanses you from sin also has the power to heal your body. Walk in the Spirit, and He will cause faith to rise up within you to receive all the benefits purchased by Christ's precious blood.
